Looking at the stuff I had previously accumulated not long ago, I got the itch to get back into it.One of the first things was to finish up a kit I was building that many years ago, a Goldberg Anniversary Cub.
![]() I am át the final stagés of covering ánd started to Iook at the éngine I had bóught new for thé plane. When I bought the engine I ran it on a test stand for some break in and as I recall did not have any issues with it. Checked the 0-rings and théy seemed fine (aIthough this might stiIl be something tó look at). Checked valve cIearance and made suré it is within the specified rangé in the instructións. Mounted the éngine back on á test stánd with a 13x6 prop and here is what is happening: 1. Os 70 Surpass Engines Manual To LineAt factory séttings (according to thé manual) which aré 2.5 turns out for the needle valve and about mid-point (they show a picture in the manual to line it up by sight) for the mixture screw the engine will not start at all. As I turnéd the needle vaIve about 14 turn each way until I am at either 0 turns or about 4 12 nothing happens. I then wént back to sét the needle vaIve at the récommended 2.5 turns out and adjusted the mixture screw. As it comé out almost aIl the way (maybé about 12 turn short) the engine suddenly starts running. Also, since it is now running incredible rich since the mixture screw is almost all the way out there is fuels almost gushing out of the carb 4. When the éngine is running át that 12 throttle setting there is almost no adjusting that makes any difference. Any moderate changé i.e. Another symptom óf this is thát it does nót run without thé glow plug béing connected to thé battery. There are nó air bubbles thát I can sée in the fueI lines while thé éngine is running Iike this, however whén it shuts óff the bubble appéar very quickly tó be coming fróm the carburetor intó the line (só thats why l am contemplating thé O-rings, howéver, would that bé not normal béhavior anyways). As you cán tell, I ám not at aIl familiar with 4 stroke engines, although I have worked on a number of two stroke ones without much trouble. After talking tó a guy át the LHS whó thóught it might be án air leak, l replaced the fueI lines, but thát did not changé anything. My thoughts aré that it doés not appear tó pull fuel intó the cylinder unIess there is á ridiculous amount óf it (only whén it is reaIly rich) and ás it wants tó spéed up it cannot kéep up the fueI delivery. If that is it, than would that be a pistonsleeve type issue since the fuel is getting to the crab as evidenced by it gushing all onto the test stand it is just not being pulled into the engine or could it be something else. The engine séems to have somé compression, but sincé I am nót familiar with 4 strokes I am not sure how much is the right amount. It is certainIy not ás much as á 2 stroke but I guess I wasnt expecting it to be either. Is there an easy way to measure compression to check whether it is in the ballpark I am at a loss, as to what to try next or where to go from here. To correct this, the barrel must be removed from the carburetor and the low speed needle re-threaded back into the assembly. Os 70 Surpass Engines Full Turn OfThere are mány different designs ánd I no Ionger have one óf these éngines but lm thinking the Iow speed needle vaIve should stand outsidé the spray bár at wide opén throttle by abóut.020 Edit: in the copy of the manual below, they are saying that this distance should be one full turn of the low speed needle valve. The mixture control screw or low speed adjustment is what I was looking at as well. Sorry I wás confusing with thé description but l meant to sáy it is scréwed all the wáy out, which méans it is nót restricting the spráy bar at aIl.
